i love rowland s. howard, and have been thinking about him a lot lately. i guess the 1 year anniversary of his death is coming up soon, so sad.

this song came on shuffle a few minutes ago. it's so deliciously weird:

witch house

trying to give this witch house stuff a chance. i'm not feeling it. a friend insists that it isn't all the same though, and i will like some of it, based on what he knows i like.

i kind of doubt it, but who knows? i don't like anything that sounds modern-dancey. old-dancey is ok though. hard to explain. i think it's the percussion or synths that turn me off. percussion in the witch house i've heard and synths in a lot of electronicy pop stuff i've heard. oh and vocals. like cold cave. and ladytron. ecch.

also, i just downloaded spotify...whee, now i can see what all the fuss is about.

day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral

oh god, do i pick a really depressing one or a really happy, uplifting "celebration of life" sort of thing? this would be kind of...cheesy, but i think it'd be sort of appropriate.

not that i believe in heaven, or that i'd be going there. not that i'd even have a funeral...death ceremonies in american culture are just plain weird and stiff, i would never want to have anything like that for myself, but i'll be dead, so who knows what will happen?

all that being said,
1. i have an excuse to post this video, which i love.
2. everyone knows how much i've loved the cure and for how long, so that's appropriate.
3. mary is all ghostly in the video and disappears, like death, duh. so it all makes sense.

ETA:
4. i love this song so much, even if people think it's "overplayed." it's iconic cure.
5. simon looks hot.

day 18 - a song that you wish you heard on the radio

ok, since this song won't fit anywhere else, and i think this is a dumb question, i'll put this song here. it's so haunting and pretty. and ya'd never hear it on the radio...

i took yesterday off work to do some fun stuff, so i missed #16...here goes.

day 16 - a song that you used to love but now hate

um, hmm. ok i've got one. debbie gibson and tiffany were big in my pre-adolescent days. i still like some debbie songs, but the tiffany songs were pretty bad. like this one. i am not 100% sure i actually liked this song, but i probably did when i was like 8.

day 17 - a song that you hear often on the radio

i rarely listen to the radio, but when i do, it's either the old school r&b/funk/disco station or a classic rock station. so 2 of my faves, from each station:

day 11 - a song from your favorite band

oh god, these are too hard! for years my favorite band was the cure, and i suppose they are still, but i've come across so many others that are absolute favorites too, like swans, cabaret voltaire, etc, so here are one each by those two.

i love this song SO much, and have some great memories attached to it. i seriously think cabs are way way underrated.

i absolutely love this haunting cover of "cry me a river" sung by jarboe:

day 10 - a song that makes you fall asleep

uhhhh this one is a little more difficult for me, but the first thing that came to mind was:

day 09 - a song that you can dance to

i really love a song i can dance to, and i really love to dance. back in my early-mid 20s, i used to frequent dark sparkle quite a bit. in fact just two days ago, i was overcome with overwhelming nostalgia (or something) and was looking at all the photos of my friends and i on the website (of which there are many.) i hardly go dancing at all anymore, for numerous reasons, but last month i went to new wave city's tribute to new order, and danced most of the evening. it felt so good...i forgot how much i love to dance. in fact, i am going to their cure tribute this weekend. they have it every year, and the last time i went to the cure one was yeeears ago. it's one of my favorites too, along with new romantic night and halloween goth night, heh.

anyway, here is a song i love to dance to. in fact, i always go nuts when someone plays it at a club and i run to the dance floor:

and here are a bunch more, because there are so many:
romeo's distress -christian death
release the bats -the birthday party
cannons -siouxsie and the banshees
sexbeat -sexbeat
baby turns blue -virgin prunes
far too frail -skinny puppy
getting away with it -electronic
lots of pulp, human league, bowie, bauhaus, joy division, new order, madonna, sisters of mercy, fad gadget and old ministry. and old dancey goth or new wave in general. i can't really dance to anything else, like ethereal cocteau-twins stuff is impossible for me.

day 08 - a song that you know all the words to

well there are many of those, but i like these lyrics and know 'em all...

anaistwin: (Default)
whoops, i missed posting on sunday because a) i was traipsing around the city with d. had a marvelous day by the way: cheap stuff in chinatown, walk through grace cathedral, cheap mojitos in north beach, dinner at loving hut in chinatown and drinks at the beatnik-y historical bars in north beach. and b) i forgot.

so, onto that:

day 06 - a song that reminds you of somewhere

i JUST said this the other day, about santa barbara.

the stone roses REALLY remind me of santa barbara too.

day 07 - a song that reminds you of a certain event

this is kind of a hard one, but i guess this one reminds me of driving to big sur, because i often play it on the drive to big sur, because it goes great with the scenery.

day 05 - a song that reminds you of someone

these 2 remind me of d:

anaistwin: (Default)
day 03 - a song that makes you happy

there are lots of these...but here's one in particular:

this song makes me giddy and i sing and dance and bounce off the walls (even if just in my head.)

others:
babies -pulp
song for a future generation -b-52's
virginia plain -roxy music
like a daydream -ride
lips like sugar -echo and the bunnymen
the big sky -kate bush
glamorous life -sheila e.
soon -my bloody valentine
everyday is halloween -ministry
anaistwin: (Default)
day 02 - your least favorite song:

oh god, where do i begin.

anything by no doubt, sublime, alanis morrissette, sheryl crow, hootie and the blowfish, blues traveler, offspring, marilyn manson, etc. (basically this is all stuff from my college/HS days.) i am not going to post a video because i do not want any of this crap stuck in my head.

also any "EBM" (not) futurepop, or whatever it's called that i used to have to hear when i went to certain goth clubs, like vnv nation, etc.
anaistwin: (Default)
onto the 30 day song challenge.

day 01 - your favorite song

is anyone actually capable of this? because i am not. there are so so so many favorites, so i will post this one, because i can ALWAYS be in the mood for this one, no matter what. i can listen to it on repeat a million times and not get sick of it.

dance with me by lords of the new church. and yeah, i prefer the extended one.

buuuut, these are other favorites:
junkyard, jennifer's veil, king ink, wildworld -the birthday party
wuthering heights -kate bush
all of only theatre of pain -christian death
like a daydream -ride
tear it up -the cramps
blood promise -swans (though i could list 20 songs by swans and there would still be more.)
all of 2X45 -cabaret voltaire
most cure songs
i love you in your tragic beauty and lisa's separation -legendary pink dots
most bauhaus songs
gentlemen take polaroids -japan
dark river, the first five minutes after death, amber rain -coil

i can't stop listening to cocteau twins!

umm, this weekend i went to the exploratorium (long long bus ride), and to see the holy kiss at cafe du nord. it was a pretty good weekend overall, except for some annoyances that i shant get into.

i have nothing interesting to write about. either in the past i was blathering on uninterestingly, or my life is currently really boring. or i have changed. i just don't...know.

one topic i can speak of is my hair. it's past my shoulders. i have the urge to cut it after having shorter hair for so long. i can't tell if it's flattering but it seems other people think it is. so i guess i will keep growing it. i dunno, long hair seems so boring, at least on me. it's a pain in the ass so i just end up putting it up most of the time anyway, defeating the purpose. i have "fine but dense" hair as told to me once by a stylist, and therefore once it gets long, it loses body. not that it ever had much to begin with. my hair has the most volume when it's kinda short + volumizing product + a tad of crimping here and there. long, i just don't know.

i can't believe i just wrote that much about my hair.

i think i am going to bake cookies this weekend (which i haven't done since i was 10), which means i need to buy another cookie sheet. i need to do xmas shopping too. i wish i could just skip over the holidays this year. yep.

i recently found both of these on ebay at ridiculously low prices. i am sort of amazed.

after work i had dinner with millie and tanner then i took a nap and millie got ready and then i woke up and got ready and we went to see the legendary pink dots at cafe du nord. had some lovely conversations with tanya, janet and patrick. sort of saw the pink dots intermittently, as it was pretty packed and i couldn't see much. i do love them though.

patrick, janet and i went to can't fail cafe and i ate Bad Food. now i am home and exhausted and i think i'll go to sleep now.

i had the most wonderful night last night. it was warm and i was just in a good mood! dodge and i went to cha cha cha for dinner and drinks and it was all sooo goooood. they serve a good mojito :D then we went to aquarius records, because i hadn't been in a couple years, had a drink at the attic and ran errands and stuff.

i am in a new-music-finding-mood. from aquarius i came away with:
nadja- radiance of shadows

they are amazing and are playing here in october and i can't wait to see them!

bohren & der club of gore- black earth

weird, good, eerie music from germany...they refer to it as horror jazz, or something.

and i found this sweet surprise:
the field mice- where'd you learn to kiss that way?

omg this is seriously out of print and i have never even seen it in the flesh. maybe it appeared now that some people don't care about cds/records as much anymore? it was cheap too :D

god i'm tired and coffee is having NO EFFECT. tonight i shall nap, then go to an art opening for [livejournal.com profile] threne's husband, stephen kasner, as long as i wake from said nap.
